I have just returned from a short trip to Bintan Island, Indonesia. It's about an hour ferry ride from Singapore and a popular tourist destination.
However, after seeing the condition of the beaches, I won't be returning in a hurry. Check out the photos on this site. I showed these photos to the manager of the resort that I was staying in and he assured me that, even though the areas photographed were outside of the resort's boundaries [only about a 100m from the main beach] that the resort does help out with cleaning up during off peak seasons. He also pointed out that the resort does also complain to the local government to make their effort too.
The hotel manager provided me with the local government details so that I could contact them directly, and I encourage you to do the same. This treatment of our world cannot go on!
